Why 10ft containers are not standard for sea shipping

Equipment incompatibility: Modern container terminals and handling equipment are designed for standard 20ft and 40ft containers and cannot efficiently process 10ft containers.

High cost: Shipping a 10ft container can cost nearly as much as a 20ft container, making it an uneconomical choice

No standard purpose-built units: While 10ft containers exist, they are often made by cutting 20ft containers in half and are not suitable or certified for international shipping as a standalone unit.

How to ship the cargo in a 10ft container

Use a 20ft flat rack: The most common method is to place the 10ft container on a 20ft flat rack or platform container and ship it as flat rack cargo.

Use LCL shipping: You can use LCL services to ship the contents of your 10ft container. The goods are brought to a depot, where they are consolidated with other shipments into a larger container and de-consolidated at the destination port.

LCL shipping (Less-than-Container Load)

This is a method for moving small (total spaces occupied by things) by ocean freight where multiple shippers’ products are grouped together into a single container. Shippers pay only for the space their (things carried by a ship, etc.) occupies within the shared container, making it a option for smaller shipments that don’t fill a whole container. This method needs/demands grouping together at a Container Freight Station (CFS) and deconsolidation at the destination, which can result in longer transit times compared to Full-Container Load (FCL) shipping.
